Fossil Mountain at the south end of the King Top Wilderness
Study Area has many deposits of fossils of ancient marine creatures from
the Lower Ordovician period. The area is to be left out of wilderness designation
by the congressional delegations proposal. The only apparent reason
for the lack of designation is a proposed strip mine on the northwest side
of the WSA. During the local hearings years ago, Then Congressman James Hansen
spent the day he was in the area with mining company representatives.
I didn't see that any time was spent with anyone who could have given an
unbiased opinion of the area concerning designation. That has to make you
wonder just whose interests the Congressman was looking after while deciding
the fate of all American's public lands wilderness. While the King Top
Wilderness Study Area awaits designation it is being vandalized
by those opposed to wilderness
